Compliance & Disclosure

How BookedBizzy handles AI and recording disclosures on every call

Last updated: March 2026

How it works in one sentence

At the start of every inbound call, your BookedBizzy agent automatically checks the caller's area code against our jurisdiction database and delivers the legally required disclosure — or defaults to full disclosure when the jurisdiction cannot be determined.

Fully Automated — No Configuration Required

BookedBizzy handles compliance automatically. You do not need to tell us which states you operate in or configure any disclosure settings. Your AI agent uses the caller's phone number to determine the applicable legal requirements in real time at the start of every call.

This approach means businesses operating across multiple states — or receiving calls from anywhere in the US — are protected without any manual setup.

How Jurisdiction Detection Works

When a call comes in, our system extracts the caller's 3-digit area code from their phone number and maps it to a US state using the North American Numbering Plan (NANP). The detected state is then checked against our disclosure requirement database:

  1. Recognized area code, disclosure required — the AI agent delivers the appropriate disclosure statement (recording notice, AI notice, or both) at the start of the call.
  2. Recognized area code, no disclosure required — the agent proceeds without a disclosure statement.
  3. Unrecognized area code — the agent defaults to full disclosure (AI + recording notice) since the caller's state cannot be confirmed.
  4. International or malformed number — the agent defaults to full disclosure (see International Calls below).
  5. No caller ID — the agent defaults to full disclosure.

Our fail-safe rule: when in doubt, we always disclose. This means some callers from states with no legal requirement may hear a brief disclosure — a minor inconvenience that protects both the caller and your business.

States Requiring Recording Disclosure

These states require all parties to consent to call recording (two-party or all-party consent). Callers from these states hear a recording notice at the start of every call.

California (CA)

Penal Code §632

Connecticut (CT)

Gen. Stat. §52-570d

Florida (FL)

Stat. §934.03

Illinois (IL)

720 ILCS 5/14-2

Maryland (MD)

Cts. & Jud. Proc. §10-402

Massachusetts (MA)

Gen. Laws ch. 272 §99

Montana (MT)

Code Ann. §45-8-213

New Hampshire (NH)

RSA 570-A:2

Pennsylvania (PA)

18 Pa.C.S. §5704

Washington (WA)

RCW 9.73.030

States Requiring AI Voice Disclosure

These states have enacted laws requiring proactive disclosure that a caller is speaking with an AI-generated voice. Only currently enforceable laws are included.

California (CA)

SB 1001 (2018); AB 2655

Texas (TX)

SB 140 (eff. Sept 2025)

Pending or delayed laws (e.g., Colorado SB 205, delayed to June 2026) are not included until they take effect. We update this list when new laws become enforceable.

What Callers Hear

Disclosures are delivered naturally as part of the greeting, so they feel conversational rather than robotic. Examples:

AI + Recording required (e.g., CA caller)

“Just so you know, I'm an AI assistant and this call may be recorded for quality purposes. If you'd like to speak with a person, just let me know at any time.”

AI disclosure only (e.g., TX caller)

“Just so you know, I'm an AI assistant. If you'd like to speak with a person, just let me know at any time.”

Recording disclosure only (e.g., FL caller)

“Just so you know, this call may be recorded for quality purposes. If you'd like to speak with a person, just let me know at any time.”

Unknown / international / no caller ID (full disclosure fallback)

“Just so you know, I'm an AI assistant and this call may be recorded for quality purposes. If you'd like to speak with a person, just let me know at any time.”

International Calls

BookedBizzy is primarily designed for US-based businesses receiving calls from North American callers. When a call originates from an international number (non-US/Canada), our system cannot determine the applicable legal jurisdiction, so it defaults to full disclosure — the AI and recording notice.

This approach errs on the side of caution because:

  • Many countries have their own AI and recording disclosure requirements (e.g., UK ICO, EU GDPR recital 60)
  • Delivering the disclosure to international callers causes no harm and protects your business
  • We cannot maintain a complete database of international regulations in every jurisdiction

Note: If your business receives a significant volume of international calls and you have jurisdiction-specific legal counsel, please contact us at support@bookedbizzy.com to discuss your compliance needs.

Keeping Our Database Current

State-level AI and recording laws are evolving rapidly. We review and update our disclosure requirement database when:

  • New state laws take effect
  • NANP adds new area codes
  • Existing laws are amended or repealed

Our compliance module includes a Last reviewed date so you can see when we last verified the state lists. If you believe our database is out of date, please let us know at support@bookedbizzy.com.
